Hi,
I need to install a linux server which should have only ftp service.
This system will be exposed to internet, so I want it as much secure as possible.
I have support with redhat, do you suggest to install that os or it's better to put a very tiny other os?

Any suggestion is appreciated.

Thanks.

A minimal, headless (no Xwindows), server only redhat install and a good Iptalbes setup will do the trick.
Make sure that you do not install sendmail, dovecot, cups, xen (available on FC6 now), and all other things that redhat installs normally (way too many).

Do keep sshd.

If I could have sex each time I reboot my server, I would definitely prefer Windoz over Linux!

ok thanks.
do you suggest as version or workstation is enough?
So during installation phase I will deselect all components and install only vsftp, right?

Thanks,
Tarek

If you are using FC5 or higher you shoudl not have the choice of server or workstations, just software packages divided by category.

If that is the case, then deselect authoring, office productivity, games, legacy servers, configuration tools, kde/gnome/X windows, etc...

You may want to look into network servers and see if you need anything there.
For a very minimal install I normally would make sure that you at least have

vi
lynx
mutt (will help you read root messages on a very minimal system)
all network utilities (tcpdump, netstat, nmap...)
gcc, fundamental
all compilers, good optional
kernel headers fundamental

all above things will install a couple of MB on your HD.
kernel source, would also be nice but you start moving away from minimal.

Finally, vsftpd is the ftp server I recommened if you are in RH world.

Hi,
I have redhat support contract so I should choose between redhat el as or redhat el workstation, I'm not going to use fedora.
But I think that workstation is enough.
This will be a virtual machine (a host machine on an esx).

Thanks again.

Workstation will do just fine for FTP server.
