How do I give root access to ftp on a SCO 5.0.6 server?

VD

If root is listed in /etc/ftpusers, remove the entry and you should be OK to go. Cheers.

Thanks Ken I checked the /etc/ftpusers file and it is empty.

This is the actual error I am getting...

Name (localhost:root):
331 Password required for root.
Password:
530 Login incorrect.
Login failed.
Remote system type is unknown.
Using ascii mode to transfer files.
ftp>

Regards,
VD

Hmmm. Silly question I know, but you are getting the password correct? I assume you can ftp to the destination from another box?

The amount of times I have tried it I must have got the password right once.

It is the same error from another system and ftp works fine for a user.

I have found a technote for UnixWare but it does not really help.

Any idea's?

VD

Have you checked the following 'other' things to check:

* The user name must be in the password data base, /etc/passwd, and not have a null password.

* The FTP server will not allow FTP logins to accounts whose shell is not listed in /etc/shells. This typically restricts access by UUCP signons, etc.

Seems to me I've run into this before but something made it go away. Guess that doesn't help much. :( Tryed a restart?

You may also take a look at /etc/ftpaccess on the ftp server.

Hope This Help, PH.

If you change one of the ftp configuration files (i.e. ftpaccess or ftpusers) you need to do an ftpshut and ftprestart (or system restart) for the changes to take effect.

As PHV suggested, make sure /etc/ftpaccess has the settings necessary to allow access to your user.

Thanks for all your suggestions just in case anyone gets this problem here's the fix...

RECREATE THE PASSWORD FOR root WITH THE SAME PASSWORD!

Yes I was keying in the correct password before anyone asks, who knows who cares only hours to the weekend.

Thanks again
