Newly Installed SBS 2003 R2
Have done the same ftp configuration that was done on the older SBS 2003.
Inside the network I can connect to the ftp site and work with the files.
Outside the network I can connect but as soon as enter any username I get disconnect by host.
Checking the FTP in IIS it still shows the connection as active

The only difference is the R2 machine has dual NIC. One connected to Modem, other connected to internal network

When frustrated remember, in the computer world there is almost always a backdoor.

Are you running ISA server or have you set up a firewall of some sort? How did you set up the port rules on your firewall? FTP isn't very straightforward in its port usage, and firewalls typicall employ a special instruction set or "fixup" to properly handle FTP traffic. Rather than simply opening port 21, see if the firewall has a pre-made ruleset for allowing FTP.

ftp uses port 21 and port 20

Hope This Helps, PH.

I am not running ISA. And the thing is I run a port check tool and it shows prot 21 and 20 open. I can connect, But when I type the username or just hit enter I get "Connection closed by remote host"

Go into the settings for the POP3 protocol virtual server and make sure that it doesn't have a restrictive "allow list" for the IPs that are allowed to connect to it. The behavior you describe is what would happen if you were connecting from a host IP that wasn't on the "allow connections from" list.

Whoops, sorry. Wrong problem, right solution. Check your FTP server properties and check the allowed IPs. See if there are restrictions there. Everything I said applies except for the pop/ftp detail.
