hi gang,

Maybe I am just stupid but how does one set up the ftp on redhat 7.2. It was set up by default on 7.1 but on 7.2 its not and I am a bit confused.
There is no in.ftpd in /sbin or anywhere for that matter.
I will be grateful if anyone could help me set it up.
Thanks.

Hi,

You need to install the wu-ftpd rpm --> ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/updates/7.2/en/os/i386/wu-ftpd-2.6.1-20.i386.rpm . Download and install as root :

rpm -Uvh wu-ftpd*.rpm

The in.ftpd file is actually placed in /usr/sbin . Also, remember to activate under xinetd (as root) :

/sbin/chkconfig wu-ftpd on

Regards

Hi,

If its real security you want then use 'vsftpd' - the one they use on ftp.redhat.com (read the bottom of this )-

You can get vsftpd from --> ftp://ferret.lmh.ox.ac.uk/pub/linux/vsftpd-1.0.1.tar.gz (that's the author's home site) - or theres a rpm of a somewhat older version here --> ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/rhcontrib/7.2/i386/vsftpd-0.9.3-fr1.i386.rpm

The only problem at the moment is theres not much documentation but this may help -->

Regards

Thanks also to ifincham. I too could not install wu-ftpd in RH 7.2. From GnoRPM, I received the following message: execution of %trigger scriptlet from linuxconf failed, exit status 127. This after many failures from the command line attempting to make and install the distribution.
