I've looked through the FAQ's and all the posts I could stand to read. Yesterday I got the boot problem taken care of (thanks RhythmAce!) but now I can't ftp into my server. It connects to port 21 but then hangs up at "Waiting for welcome message" and never finishes the connection. I've tried with pasv on and off and it makes no difference. Eventually I get a "Blocking call cancelled' error message.

Any ideas? Will be glad to include any configuration info that would help....

Also, FYI, my MSDOS ftp connects but also hangs up with a blinking cursor. I have 3 ftp clients and they're all doing the same thing!

Hi,

Need a bit more info really.. What distro are you using ? Also which ftp server (e.g. wu-ftpd) and is it anonymous or 'normal' ftp ?

What response do you get if you ftp to localhost on the linux box itself ?

Regards

I am using Red Hat 6.2, and wu-ftpd. I am also using normal (login name/password) ftp protocol. If I knew how to ftp to localhost on the box I would - will read up on that when I get home from work.

This was all working fine before I had the problem with hda8 the other day. Since then I can only telnet into the box but not ftp. I suspect I will have to go in and look at all the related files - maybe install the upgrade for wu-ftpd? The problem is, however, in the server since I am not able to ftp in from my work account either.....

Hi,

You would just open a xterm / console window and enter the command 'ftp localhost' or 'ftp 127.0.0.1' which is the same. (This assumes you have the 'ftp' rpm installed which is almost certain).

It might be best to just reinstall the wu-ftpd rpm - you can download the 6.2 update version from --> ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/updates/6.2/en/os/i386/wu-ftpd-2.6.0-14.6x.i386.rpm

Install (Upgrade) with - as root :

rpm -Uvh wu-ftpd*.rpm

or if its already shown as installed :

rpm -Uvh --replacepkgs wu-ftpd*.rpm

RH 6.2 used inetd (vs newer xinetd) for ftp /telnet , etc. You can check if inetd is listening on port 21 as it should be with the following (as root) :

/usr/sbin/lsof -i TCP:21

Hope this helps

I downloaded the upgrade file, saved it on a floppy, and copied it to my server. When I tried to rpm, it told me it couldn't open the file. I have not been able to ftp to the rpmfind.net server to get the file from the linux box.

I have the installations CD's and may have to just reinstall the ftp from there.

A friend of mine says he has the same problem intermittently and has not found a permanent resolution.

Is this connected to the hda8 corruption I experienced the other day? I did an e2fsck to fix that one.

Hi wiwoman,
If you had any bad blocks that couldn't be fixed, you should have been asked by e2fsck what you want to do with them if you were in interactive mode. Regardless of how you answered, it means you lost some data on that partition. You may notice that some other things have stopped working too. If you have GnoRPM you can query or verify the wu-ftpd package and see if it has any problems. If so you can download it and use "rpm -Fvh" to reinstall it or try to reinstall from GnoRPM. If that has stopped working too, dust off the ol' distro CDs.)

Y'all are the best! With your instructions, plus some pointers from I was finally able to download the upgrade directly to the linux box and get it installed. Voila! ftp back on track :)

One of these days I really need to get a practice server and do a cold installation. I do believe that next computer show I'll do just that. Of course, I will be posting a million questions on here but it's good to know there are people who 'know their stuff' and are willing to share the knowledge.

Thanks again!!!

Thanx wiwoman, but not all of us are linux gurus like ifincham, who I think IS the best. I own my own construction company and do residential remodeling. I started my website about 2 years ago and about 6 months ago I started hosting it on my own server. I knew nothing about linux and to this day, I'm not even sure how it's pronounced.) I found this forum and with help from these great people I was able to configure my web server and mail server. I kept coming back for more help and I noticed that people were having problems I just went through so I gave them my 2 cents. The point I'm making is that if you have a helping cell in your body you're going to find yourself answering more questions than you ask. Do I hear an amen?)

Echoes of 'amen' all around! Once I get the server back up to snuff I may write an FAQ of my own for those who are in the Linux loop somewhere between ignorance and expertise. After my server was offline for a few months, I forgot half of what I knew! I just dabble at website design/e-commerce for a few commercial sites when I'm not playing corporate trainer and safety guru. If I understood Linux as well as I understand 29 CFR 1900 I'd be a whiz!

This has been absolutely the best place for me to find answers quickly to all my questions and I want to reiterate my thanks to all those who are so willing to share their experience and knowledge. I hope in the future I'll be able to return the favor. Oh heck, maybe someday I'll even read the Linux Bible if I ever find the time!

Hi RhythmAce,

I know where to find the answer to the "How to pronounce Linux" question. Got to

and click on "How to Pronounce Linux"! You even have a choice of the Swedish or English versions! CaKiwi
