I have a question for you guys/gals. For some reason I am having trouble with ftp. I have no firewall restrictions on port 21, yet I can not ftp to anywhere via internet explorer or dos for that matter. I downloaded a program WS_Ftp Pro, and with that I could connect fine. When I try to ftp using internet explorer (on any computer in the network) I get prompted for a user name and password, it seems to authenticate, then begins to "retrieve folder contents" - and never makes it past there. It is the same thing in dos, it tries to get the ascii file list then just freezes. Someone please help!!!!! :)

By default IE does not use passive FTP, if you are behind a firewall, you will need to use passive FTP.

To enable FTP passive mode in IE:

Tool -> Internet Options -> Advanaced
then select "Use Passive FTP ...

That was exactly it, thank you so much. I had never even heard of passive ftp before
