Hello there,

I was wondering, if there is a way to ftp the files (.doc, .xls) from the local machine desktop or a directory (NT/95/98) from UNIX?

$ ftp ???

Any thoughts on this ?

You need to know whether there's an ftp server on one machine and a client on the other, and an account that has access to the files you want.

All but the oldest Win machines will have an ftp client. Most (but not all) Unixes will have an ftp server or one can be added.

For the few where that's not an option, see

I would only add that if sending .doc or .xls files, it would probably be advisable to use the binary transfer mode within the ftp session. Just type bi at the ftp prompt.

Yes, that it a problem with Windows rather stupidly defaulting to text translation mode for ftp.

Another useful thing is to turn on "hash" so that you can visually verify that data is transfering, and to do "prompt off" if you are going to use mget with wildcards and don't need to be prompted on each and every file.

That's assuming they aren't using a graphical Windows ftp client of course.
