Hello All,

Server1:
user1 has a file with rwxrwxrwx permissions
user1 ftp's this file to Server2 where his account is also available and his .profile umask is 002.

When checking on server 2 the file magically changed
from rwxrwxrwx to rwxr-xr-x

From where is this file permission mangling coming ?
Can this be disabled to retain file permissions ?
it's solaris 8 and I've been told this is not possible to retain file permission over FTP ?

Any help, greatly appriciated!
Iga

Check the file /etc/default/ftpd to see if the variable UMASK is set. If so, comment it out and try again... You may have to run pkill -HUP ftpd to restart the daemon.

Hello bfitzmai,

What if there is no /etc/default/ftpd ?

Can i create it ?

Thanks!

never mind
found /etc/ftpd

I think I should be able to set everything I need in there

If you are using Solaris 8 then /etc/default/ftpd should have a setting like UMASK=xxx. With Solaris 9 and above I believe they started implemented WU-FTP, and the setting might be a little different in /etc/ftpd.
