I have set up the ftp daemon under inetd and tcpd, but I can't connect to the Linux box from a W98 box. Telnet works fine. RED HAT 5.2 release Linux. Any suggestions ? The ftp appears to time out on the W98 box. I do get the 'connected to' message but then nothing except 'remote host diconnected' after about a minute
Check the ftp config files in /etc. The exact names of the files will vary from package to package (I run Solaris so can't help you with Red Hat specifics).
Many ftp servers default to denying access to root, for security systems. Are you logging in as a non-root user?

The other thing to try is restarting inetd :

$ kill -HUP <pid_of_inetd>

This is especially true if you have altered the configuration of anything that inetd might start (or indeed inetd itself).
The thing I found with Linux (before I switched to Solaris) is that if one inetd thing works (e.g. telnet) then they all tend to be functional - it's just a config thing.
