Hi everybody.

I am FTP'ing a dataset from mainframe to PC (csv) with a literal text strings as headers.

Once of the headers contains a £ character.

However, this is being converted to a $ during the transfer of the data.

I need to keep this £ as a £, can anyone help?

Kind Regards,

Chris...

That brings back memories. I used to work on the mainframes a long time back, when I first started programming in SAS, and this was something I was aware of back then. There was actually some setting on the mainframe that had localised the currency symbol there to show as a pounds sign rather than as a dollar sign, and it converts over when it is transferred to the PC.
You'll probably need to talk to your mainframe support or IT support people to overcome this, there'll be some setting in the transfer process, or in your interface program, possibly that you can change to do this.
I think from memory we just changed it in the text afterwards as a work around when this issue cropped up (after some system update I think it was) till it was fixed properly.
I hope this helps.

Hi Chris.

Thanks for the reply, I kinda thought as much.

Unfortunately where I am contracting at the moment getting any changes to the mainframe set-up would require some sort of Satanic Ritual, possibly with a Virgin Sacrifice.

At this time all the virgins are needed for coding.

Anyway, as a work around I established what character the £ converts back to when FTP'd back to the mainframe.

This gave me a " à ".

So, if I use this in my code instead of the £ I get the £ on the csv file that is created on the PC.

It looks weird in the code but it does add to the mythos.

Thanks again.

Kind Regards,

Chris...
