Hi all, and Happy New Year.

When trying to fsck a filesystem on one of our old ICL DRS6000 machines, I'm getting the following message:

# fsck -F vxfs -o full /dev/rdsk/c1d2s2
log replay in progress
pass1 - checking inode sanity and blocks
inode 2 marked bad, allocation flags 0001 clear? (ynq)y
root inode is invalid - terminating fsck

Does anyone know the reason for this, and even better, whether there's a fix. If it helps, the system crashed the other day - not surprisingly, given it's age! Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Most Unix filesystems BEGIN at inode 2- and that gets cleared with the first "y" response, so there's nothing more possible.

You need to go in with a low-level debugger (fsdb or similar) or seek professional help. I do list some folks at under data recovery- you need someone who groks this specific file system and has the tools to work with it.

Thanks Tony, that's what I suspected, but you can live in hope eh? Cheers.
