My company have an finance system and is runing solaris 2.6.

The finance system have problem on dump backup and found we have some dump is not complete. The vendor provide this system tell us it is because our system harddisk is unstable or maybe the HD have bad block and make the backup procedure cannot write on the bad block, which make the backup not complete.

I am really sure the system is stable as Sun Microsystem Engineer have already checked the system and found no problem. However, as the HD on the solaris is not from Sun Micro. They said they won't check it for us.

I check it by fsck and find no problem. Or is the fsck not powerful enough to check bad block. Please advise...

Thx

You might turn to the harddisk manufacturer. He should be able to tell you how you can verify your disk.

FSCK will tell you if you have bad blocks.
You may want to look if there are any firmware revisions for your hard drive.
Depending on the tool you use for your backup, some have (or had) problems with file system bigger than 2 Gigs.
If you have a spare disk, do a dd of the problem disk to the other disk and then try to back it up and see what happens. Too bad I.T. is not cash business

You can analyse your disk at least for read error using format command format->disk no.>analyse>read-only .The RW analysis would destroy the data so don't select it .If read analysis goes well take a backup and decide you want to reccreate the partition run r/w analysis or use another harddisk.
