Hi all, please help. I 'd like to establish a home server. I have apache 1.3 for window. My OS is window 98. The web editor is frontpage 2002. Frontpage server extention is 5.0 (for window 95/98/2000). I open the frontpage 2002, in "web setting" it recognize the frontpage server extention, but it displays "no server currently in use", apparently the editor does not recognize apache server. When I run Apache, I am able to reach my home server from outside computer, but I can not use Guestbook and messageboard features...it displays the server needs to have frontpage server extention installed!!!...Please help

Unfortunately, some Front Page extension features don't work in Windows with Apache; particularly Hit Counters and Search Forms. I run Win2K with Apache and installed FPSE anyway. Hover buttons do work, but for hit counters and guestbooks I use a CGI script under Perl 5.6.

Can you please help on using "CGI script under Perl 5.6", I am amateur on this subject. Thanks.

And by the way, why don't you use IIS included with Win2K for server purpose. Just curious, is IIS bad?

Hi mate,

If you are trying to run this as an internet server and not for just testing use then read the following very carfully..

This doc is included in your apache directory..

WARNING
-------

Apache should never be used as a production server under any
consumer operating system such as Windows 95, 98, or ME (Millennium
Edition). Only Windows NT 4.0 or 2000 should be considered, and only
with appropriate NTFS file system and user security administration.
Apache runs on these consumer Windows environments only to
provide test, development or trusted intranet server platforms.

Apache on Win32 should be considered initial-release quality code.
It has not been subjected to the same stresses on its stability and
security that the Unix releases have enjoyed, so there is a greater
possibility of undiscovered vulnerabilities to stability or security
of the Win32 port.

Apache performs best, and is still most reliable on Unix platforms.
Over time the performance, reliability and security for the Apache
Win32 port has improved, and continues to improve. Folks doing
comparative reviews of webserver performance are still asked to
compare against Apache running on a Unix platform such as
Solaris, FreeBSD, or Linux.

The Win32 code for Apache 2.0 has been entirely revised and large
segments have been rewritten from scratch. Once the Apache 2.0
server is released, we strongly encourage all Win32 users to move to
that platform for increased stability and security.

Hope this helps Wullie
