Ok, from what I hear, A user running Access, which is linked to an access database server is a bandwidth hog. The client gets all the information it needs and THEN runs the query on it.

Is this the way it works? If so, what would happen if you used different server software? How hard is it to set up an Access client to link to a non-Access database.

Damn, I wish MS decide call this Access. It's hard to write about it doing anything.

You're right, Access is a bandwidth hog, but not a big one.

One solution is to have a SQL Server backend which then send only results to Access.
