From Word to ID - style sheet problems

Hi everyone,

I have a Word file that's formatted with the Normal style in Word and I've also applied some italics which I want to preserve once in ID. I've successfully placed the file into ID and have applied about nine styles to the different paragraphs. There are two different font families used in the document - the first font (regular version) is used for one para and the other eight paras use either the bold or semi bold version of the other font. The one para that uses the regular version font has the italics which I wanted preserved - once the style is applied to this para the whole lot gets converted to the regular version of the font specified in the style and the preserved italics get converted into the regular italic version of the font - everything okay here.

The problem starts with another two paragraphs. The first para is styled with the bold version of the second font. Some of the paras (it's actually one line) has italics specified in Word and I thought that once in ID and the style is applied that it would automatically be converted to bold italics, the same as what happened in the regular font paragraph. Instead it just takes on the bold font with no italics. Anyone know why this happens?

The second problem is with another paragraph which has some italics and some regular font in Word, but in ID this para is formatted with a style which has the semi-bold version of the font. Once styled in ID, the words that were non-italicised in Word took on the semi-bold font according to the style applied, but the other words on the same line only took on a regular italics not semi-bold italics as it needs to be.

Again, would really appreciate it if someone could shed some light on the problem.

Thanks

Do you have the typefaces for the bold italics loaded? If not, then InDesign will ignore that command. For instance, if you have something italicized in Word, but don't actually have the italic face, the type won't be italicized. In Word (and even in QuarkXPress), you can "machine" a font where it gives the illusion of being italicized...sometimes it prints and sometimes it doesn't. InDesign doesn't allow you to do that (that's a good thing).

Also, if you've added "bold" or "italic" in Word and the fonts you're using in InDesign are actually "semibold" or "oblique," InDesign won't make that leap for you. What I would suggest is making a character style that is "bold only" or "italic only" and the ONLY thing you enter into the style is BOLD or ITALIC or whatever. Then, strip out the local formatting of italics and apply the character style to that text.

Hope that helps a bit.

I think I'll go the character style sheet way - thanks for your help!
