fresh install of xp creates errors

I have reinstalled XP Home from a dead HP machine (never again :( into an IBM P4. MS activated it but there is no sound now and the USB ports are not working. Updating the drivers does nothing.
I havent been able to find an workable solutions via Google.
Any assistance appreciated.

When I try to update drivers I am getting an error during installation... "The data is invalid"

Did a repair install and that has solved all the problems.
