I'm setting up a spare box with 4x73GB drives. I wish to keep my rootvg at its minimum so I can create two other vg's.
Is there a way when doing the install to limit the rootvg size when installing from cdrom? When I review the installation parameters I can see where one can select the install disk(s) but no where to define the limit. My first attempt consumed the entire disk.

Thanks for any/all ideas.

A volume group is made of entire hdisks, you cannot have a volume group on less than a disk.
Also, if you want to add some space to a volume group you must add a full hdisk.

To add to this IMHO if those 4x73GB drives are on one controller then you might not be able to use them for other than the rootvg! We have for example 2x73GB drives and they are sharing the same controller so we could only use them rootvg.

Khalid

Depends on the hardware you have - some AIX servers can have an optional hardware RAID function. If you have this, you can create LUNs on the disks of a more suitable size, each of which is seen by AIX as an hdisk.

You can as well try using VIO server, assign those disks to it and then create virtual disks with the size you want!!!

Khalid

Thank you all for your suggestions. For this DR box I've ordered 4x300GB which should provide sufficient storage.
