My friend just got a PC that came w/ XP home edition (i know the forum says pro but i couldnt find anywhere to put this). She asked me to install norton and office for her. after i installed norton (8.0 antivirus) stuff started freezing up. boot up the computer and it will freeze right after starting windows. the cursor still moves and u can click on icons but programs wont launch. not even control panel. i booted up to safe mode and didnt have that problem. i rebooted again in normal mode and it started fine and was actually running for a while but she called me back an hour later to tell me it started locking up again. anybody know why it's doing this?

Uninstall Norton and see how it behaves. If everything is OK then reinstall Norton. If it locks up again check the Support site for Norton and see if there are any similar stories there.

Have a look at the Task Manager to see what is using all the CPU.

If you don't think Norton is your problem you can try these.

To get further information about the error look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on these sites.

To checkout unnecessary services you are running.

See if you have any services that are flagging as "Starting" but not actually running.

Some general things to try.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
