please help, i have win98SE with 2 IDE hard drives and a geforce 4 mx card. When i boot up/start my PC somtimes it freezes/hangs when its loaded the wallpaper and before it loads the desktop icons, and a long line of small green bars appears accross the very top of the screen, on top of the wallpaper. I have to use reset button to make it start up again. This can sometimes happen 5 or 6 times in a row. Any ideas what could be causing this.??? many thanks.

Sounds like a possible video issue. I would download the latest drivers, then uninstall and install the latest version. Also, download Spybot from update it, and scan for any spywares. You might do the same for your antivirus program. If the wallpaper you use requires active desktop, disable it, makes things a little more unstable.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

You might try activating the boot menu and starting with a bootlog. Might show the problem up.
Problems have also shown up with an install order problem with zonelabs if you happen to be using zone alarm.

thanks so much for your help so far.
I do have Zonealarm that starts up with PC. Please can you explain about using a bootlog? how do i do that, how will it help.?
Please explain about this install order problem.? what is it and how does it affect your PC, and how do you fix it.?
Very many thanks for your kind help.

Artois,

BOOTLOG.TXT and BOOTLOG.PRV are (by default) created by Windows everytime you boot up (the first one being the most recent and the latter the previous log prior to the current). They are hidden text files found in your drive C:. You may just want to do a FIND FILES on your drive C: to locate this file (BOOT*.txt will do good in the search). Both will show you the actions of Windows in the boot process - what drivers are being loaded, what are being initialized, etc. This might give you an idea what Windows action is causing the problem.

I hope this helps. Peace! [peace]
