This is the first time I have experienced this with Win XP pro / SP2. All of a suuden for no apparent reason, the computer just hangs. It freezes and will not respond to ANYTHING except to reset or turn it off with the power switch. I had recently installed thomas bro map program and Nero 6 with updates. After the problem appeared I uninstalled both pieces of software but the problem is still there. Sometimes after a short time, sometimes after hours. No rhyme of reason I can find. No viruses detected.

At my wits end. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks

p.s. I also tried system restore. No Help

I would make sure my memory is good and that your not having any heat issues. Those are the two most likly causes I can think of.

Edit your Boot.ini to change the /

right-click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery - Settings, Edit This starts a Notepad session of your Boot.ini file.

Change the /noexecute= from OptIn to AlwaysOff
Make the change and save it.
Reboot and test.

Bcastner,

Well that fix did not do the job it took all day, but it froze again. Any other sugesstions?

I am stuck. Can't have it freezing up

Here is a little more info from my event viewer. I could not find much on Microsoft Knowldge Base. Maybe you've seen this before. It just started a week or so ago.
Not even sure this is the problem.

Details
Product: Windows Operating System
ID: 101
Source: ESENT
Version: 5.2
Symbolic Name: STOP_ID
Message: %1 (%2) %3The database engine stopped.

Explanation
The extensible storage engine database engine stopped.

Possible causes include:

An online restoration failed. There may be missing log files on the computer or in an online restoration, or there may be old log files that are out of sequence with the log that is mentioned in the Restore.env file.
A database could not be loaded. The directory where the database or logs exist might not have the correct permissions assigned to it in order to load the store.
An information store was unloaded.
There might be file-level virus-scanning software running against the log file directory.

User Action
To troubleshoot the problem, check the Application log and the System log to determine the exact sequence of related events leading up to this event.

For more information about this event, see article Q274321 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Also had error code 7000

Also when I ran the sc query the following returned:
C:\>sc query asapi

SERVICE_NAME: asapi
TYPE : 1 KERNEL_DRIVER
STATE : 1 STOPPED
(NOT_STOPPABLE,NOT_PAUSABLE,IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 183 (0xb7)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
CHECKPOINT : 0x0
WAIT_HINT : 0x0

What am I not seeing?

Curious as to what prompted you to sc query asapi?

Still baffled as to why you should throw an ESENT error. Is this computer networked to an Exchange Server, or to Small Business Server 2003?

My event viewer stated the Asapi service failed to start due to the following error: can not create a file when that file already exists. Also said Sygate for NT wg3n service failed because the system cannot open the file.

No the computer is not networked per se. However I have two other computers connected on-line (cable) through a modem / router in my residence. Nothing else.
This has been this way for about a year now and this is the first time this has happened.

Besides that Bill, I'm clutching at straws.

I'm looking everywhere I can to try and fix this.

Thanks
Steve

I to have had hang problems with XP Pro SP2 after installing nero IN CD Packet writing software. I seem to have something going on with CD burning. Still trying to figure it all out right now. Anyone else notice this.

cbmudd,
Did you uninstall INCD packet writing and if so did that fix the hang problem?

. Start, Run, services.msc
Find the Asapi service. Stop it if running, and set it startup to disabled.

Apply ForceASPI to make sure you have a current ASPI layer. Nero installs its own ASPI layer as well:
I just see no reason for the asapi service to be running at all. This is essentially from the Win9x family.

. InCD can do strange things, but freezing the system randomly seems curious unless you were doing something with the CD Drive at the time. It might be worth removing InCD and testing. Use the "Clean" or removal tools from the Nero Web site after using Control Panel, Add/Remove programs.

. "Sygate for NT wg3n service" bothers me too. This is the firewall component of Sygate. You have to consider if you need this, particularly if any other firewall is in use. You want only one firewall active on your system.

But it is also intersting that all of your Event Viewer error messages are essentially disk related. It would be worthwhile doing a Recovery Console session with chkdsk /r

Now this is weird, I still show asapi error in event viewer but asapi does not show up in services.msc????
I did uninstall INCD last night just in case. But it still freezes. I am unsure as to how to apply ForveASPI. As for Sygate, How do I get rid of it? It does not show up in services either. At this point I have uninstalled Nero 6, Thomas guide map, Used system restore, uninstalled INCD packet writing and changed noexecute= from OptIn to AlwaysOff. I will have to have chkdsk /r run the next reboot as it would not run now. It would only give me the option of running the next time the computer is turned on. I will go to the nero website and use the Clean or removal tools at this point. I hope this info helps you help me
One other thing B, I did install a new DVD burner (madd dog 12X) about three weeks ago (this is where the Nero 6 came from). But again, the freeze started about a week ago.

Thanks.

Interesting. There are aspects to your problem that still confound me.

. sc config asapi start=disabled
That will change the startup desposition for asapi service.

. You need to find the OEM manufacturer of your new CD Rom. In all probability it is Lite-On, but take a look at the drive itself. You want to write down the model number and do a web search to see if there is a firmware update. These occur more often than most people realize, and yes there are instances where faulty firmware can cause a system freeze.

. In all likeliehood this is a hardware issue of some kind, including supporting drivers. USB devices are the most common for a freeze without a corresponding entry in the Event Viewer logs. This includes mice and keyboards. Note: some versions of Microsoft's mice and keyboards require a driver update under SP2, as do many other brands. Next in frequency is probably video boards and their drivers. Network adapters earn a third place ranking in my experience. The only thing you can do is to check each connected device and search for updates on the Web. Belarc Advisor or SiSoft Sandra makes the listing chore a little easier:

I know how frustrating this can be. I had an issue with one machine that took me months to discover an ADMTek ethernet adapter that did not like heavy UDP traffic.

Thanks for all your help Bill. I will check all these out and hopefully will get this done. It is very hard to work and surf the web when the equipment hangs. I did the chkdsk /r and apparently no problems were found.

Thanks again for all the hard work. It is very greatly appreciated. I'm very thankful for and I do support Tek Tips. Y'all are great.

Incidently Bill, after going to Nero web site and using their general clean tool, at one point a system registry checker came up and it said something to the effect of some errors were found in the registry and fixed. I don't know if the problem was fixed. I also got a message at reboot that Pinncale detected a driver problem with driver settings and asked if I would like to fix it. I answered yes and so far no hangs. But it is early yet.

Steve

You might run a diagnostic tool on your harddrive... those asapi errors usually indicate HD failure or indicate it's about to fail...

just out of curiousity what kind of machine is it, speed? memory?

Doh!!

Asapi error, not ATAPI error.
Asapi hopefully has nothing to do with his hard drive.
