Freeze Panes not Working

Greetings,

I am using Excel XP and have discovered that the "Freeze Panes" option is grayed out (although the "Split" option is not). No matter what cell I click on I cannot activate "Freeze Panes". Any ideas as to why this is?

Is the worksheet protected? If so, then freeze panes is disabled.

or have panes already been frozen?
