I need to setup a file backup of (asp / html / cfm) and access databases - no sql to an external HDD on a file server. I have about 10 virtual servers ranging from nt4 to win2k. I've tried using xcopy to individual destination folders on the external hdd but it doesnt seem to be working out well for me.

What are my other options, I just need a full file backup to run every day or even every 2-3 days over LAN (using unc path).

Thanks!

Just use NTBackup. Map a drive to this UNC path, and go through the Wizard to back up your selections to this mapped drive.

Also, you should ensure that you backup the IIS Metabase since it holds all the information regarding to how your websites are configured. From IIS mgr-->Right Click on the Server and select Backup/Restore Configuration

Thank you for the useful info guys! As opposed to going into IIS to select backup config, I can just include the directory that the iis config file is in, correct? (*.xml?)

Include the System State in NTBackup.

"The most reliable backup of the metabase that you can make is through the System State option found in Ntbackup.exe, which is a Windows 2000 backup utility."

There's another method involving VBS, but not sure of your comfort level with that:

On the whole, the IIS Metabase doesn't change if you don't change the *configuration* of your web site on a regular basis, so regular backups of the metabase and system state may not be necessary for you.

Thanks for the reminder Chip. Didn't recall if the Metabase was included in the System State
