Freehand 9 Coverting .eps files

I am working on a mac OS 9.2.2, Freehand 9, and all the sudden (started yesterday) when I save files as .eps's and then go to open them again, Freeehand has CONVERTED the files to flattened images and I can't edit any of the information. I am afraid to open any artwork I have saved in freehand as an .eps in fear of losing the artwork.
This has never happend before. Can anyone help me out?
