Free Transform Tool 1

...what's the point?
I am a self-taught AI user, and have never really seen the point of the free transform tool, when the same transformations may be effected using the regular selection arrow.
Is there some feature I'm not seeing?

As far as perspective distortion (and again I remind you that I'm self-taught on AI) I've been using the envelope tool and just using the vert or horiz aspects of it, with the actual envelope set to 0%. Also, skew and free distort.
