free source control programs

hi, im looking to replace sourcesafe for reasons i wont go into.

so the question is, can anyone recommend a free (pretty much unlimited*) secure source control app?

features id like if possible:
version control
secure web checkout
a decent database
multi platform isnt a requirement but would be nice if its in there.

i found this page

however there doesnt seem to be any reviews.

*needs to support more than 2 workspaces etc
