Most of the CCNA books come with "ok" test software - what are you using to study now ??
I have been teaching CCNA students in a Cisco Academy for about 8 years - best advice other then tons of hands on work with your own Cisco lab is to get the Sybex CCNA Study Guide by Todd Lammle and read it front to back right before you are going to take the exam - $30 for book with CD
CD-ROM Includes:
• Chapter Review Questions
• Four Full-Length Practice Exams
• 200 Electronic Flashcards
• Audio and Video Instruction from Todd Lammle
• Full book in searchable PDF format
- - - If - - - you have prepaired long and hard for the exam - reading the 800 page book will not take long because you will not be memorizing the book!!!
Those that failed the exam the 1st or 2nd time (and did not do this) after they did this most of them passed the exam with little trouble - the book hits on most of what is important to know for the exam - but this is only helpfull if you have done lots of other study and TONS OF HANDS ON LABS WITH REAL CISCO ROUTERS AND SWITCHES!!!!
I have the Todd Lamle book but haven't read it from cover to cover. But I'll take your advice.
With regards to ccna lab, i dont have any. I only use what we have in our office which is currently in production. And I am limited to what i can do. I was thinking if i will take a lot of practice test it will help me pass the exam.
You said - "I was thinking if i will take a lot of practice test it will help me pass the exam." That is NOT a good idea - use the practice tests to see where you are - what areas you need to spend more time on based on what areas you get wrong - DO NOT JUST LEARN TEST QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS!!!
Get yourself 3 routers and 2 switches on ebay - you could most likely get 2 2501s, a 2610xm and 2 2924-xl switches for about $300-$350 if you watch the auctions! You can not do this with the production routers at work - you need to read the books and then put what you read into action!!
At the very least get a good router sim and at least practice that - but as both Burt and I said - REAL CISCO ROUTERS AND SWITCHES !!!!
I just passed today and here was my study material ranked of import (in my opinion)
1. REAL LAB
Two routers and two switches will get you going on the CCNA level..
(Note: Packet Tracer, GNS3, and Boson are all good as well but nothing can prepare you for the real world like an actual lab)
I tried the SemSim router simulator and study package bundle but was thoroughly unimpressed.. disappointed actually! Not recommended by me!
2. Lammle or CiscoPress... Your choice but I do recommend the CiscoPress 31 Days before the CCENT and 31 Days before the CCNA books as supplemental study material!!! Very focused!
3. I believe that this is what you are asking...
This costs $109 but is definitely a useful tool and I will use it in the future... Let me say this.. Do NOT try to memorize questions and think that you will pass.. You must UNDERSTAND the theory and concepts behind the questions. What this tool will do for you is allow you to focus your studies on the more pertinent areas as CCNA covers a vast topic area. Wait until you are about a month from taking the exam and schedule your class. Buy this as well as the 31 Days before CCNA CiscoPress book and rigorously attack the material. Read the explanations on Measureup even if you get the questions right.. Jot down areas that you find yourself weak in and re-read chapters in those areas.. also play around with your lab and gain experience in the weaker areas.. This will all pay off in the long run! Over all remember that your primary goal is to obtain a networking job of some sort and this usually requires experience with actual routers and switches etc. My point is to challenge yourself to actually learn and not just to get certified. Otherwise you may find that you are not retained very long after employment.
4. Also want to mention one other great learning tool...
These videos are awesome for initial comprehension of theory and I would HIGHLY recommend them for anyone that is new to the field. Jeremy is a great teacher!!! There are also some videos offered by Chris Bryant (The Bryant Advantage) but I have not had an opportunity to test the videos.. I did purchase the Bryant Advantage CCNA prep material but found it limiting (Can only install on two PC's etc) Lammle books come in PDF format on the attached CD and this is much better in my opinion as it can be searched rather quickly etc.
I hoe that this helps... Remember.. You must design your own study plan.. This is just my opinions and what has worked for me!
Cisco Network Academy Program!!!
If you can devote the time (Not very expensive at most community colleges) then this is definitely the absolute BEST preparation for CCNA!!!
