FreeBSD is Open Source software based on BSD unix from Berkley University.
It is available for free from and runs on Intel based systems (386, 486, Pentium etc.)
You will have to do a bit of reading on the web page to get it setup, but it is rather easy to do, compared to some of the Linux distributions.
And yes, the entire source code tree is available for free. I've been running FreeBSD for years on a large number of machines and have been very impressed by it's speed, flexibility and security compared to all the other operating systems I have run.

If you're still wanting to obtain FreeBSD; I have version 2.2.8 and am willing to sell it *Very* near cost to fellow Tek-Tipers ($0.25>cost for those with >15 tipmaster votes...special reward for those who've helped) Cost is about $1.00 for the Media & Jewel Case plus actual shipping and packaging costs.
You might try your local library. I seen it at a few libs here in the bay area. They are the older versions though.
You could join your local freebsd users group and borrow it from someone along with all the advise your going to need.
Our FUG in the bay area (BAFUG) has scheduled regular install-a-thons once a month at public events. Just bring your pc and they do the rest.
