I'm taking a course on Networking and I wanted to see what Frame Type my NIC was using. I've looked at all the configuration options for my NIC but there isn't anything to specify Frame Type.

I'm assuming that it is using Ethernet 802.3 but how can I be sure?

If you have IPX protocol loaded, the frame type settings are usually in it's properties.

What OS are you running? On Windows, the NIC is usually set to try and Auto-detect frame type; but by default it tries to use 802.2 when sending.

If you're running just TCP/IP, then you won't really have to worry about it.

I have TCP/IP running on Win2000.

It's more of a case of curiousity and in trying to understand the different frame types. I wanted to try connecting 2 computers using various frame types just to be sure I know how to do it.

The only things I could configure on my card that had any resemblance to Frames were the "Early Tx Threshold" setting (it says 4, but I don't know what that means) and the "Line Speed" (mine is set to Auto but the other options are for Full or Half Mode at 10 or 100.

Since there is mention of "Early Tx", can I then assume I'm using a 100BaseTx network card and thus a 802.3 frame type?

Thanks for your reply

One way to know for sure would be to load up a protocol analyzer and look at the actual frames. is a great, free, open-source PA that I use extensively. My W2K machine is putting Ethernet II frames onto the network.
