Hello I'm new to wan engineering most of my experience has been with network administration NT, Novell, Unix, etc. I am now in charge of our wan setup. We just receive a customer report on our frame relay. I know frame-relay terminology, but i need a depth look at some issues. In the report is says two of our remote locations gets 256 bandwidth, but the CIR says 192 for both locations. Do we suppose to be getting 256 than 192? Thanks who help

the cir will always be less than the bandwidth
cir is your committed information rate, but you
can get up to 256 through your pipe

CIR- Committed Information Rate.. this is what is "promised" by the Telco for the link. You can normally "burst" over this if its available. But.. some vendors CHARGE you when you burst over so get a copy of your contract and sit down with your local rep to go over the terms. Also check the SLA ( service level agreement) get the phone number for calling in problems to the telco.

Welcome to the world networking ;)

Thanks for the info algator & wybnormal. Could you tell me exactly what is the "pipe" or links, thanks.

The "pipe" is your Frame WAN connection. Within the pipe there are PVCs(permament virtual circuit) These have a specified amount of bandwidth that can be a fraction of the total bandwidth of the "pipe" For example, you might have a T1 frame that terminates at your HQ's router but you have several subinterfaces that connect remote sites through the same Frame cloud. Wach subinterface can have a fraction of the total 1.54Mbps available. Depending on your load, you can "over subscribe" the HQ link where the total of fraction bandwidth would normally equal MORE then the 1.54 but you are banking on the fact that not everyone is going use the total 1.54 at the same time.
