Basically the company that I work for has some remote sites that we connect to through VPN. Main office has a t1 the three remote offices has DSL. What I am trying to do is convince the upper brass that we should go to frame relay. The growth of the company is pushing us in that direction.

So I guess my question is, does anyone know a good website that gives the benefits (advantages) of frame? I need stuff that a business person can understand. I need to be able to justify the cost if we move in that direction. A book or magazine article would work too. I just need some info...most of what I found is what Frame Relay is and how it works...all technical stuff. I need to be able to prove that it will be a good thing for the company.

Thanks

I have been working Sprint and Cisco on the 824 router and a 1720 router over a frame circuit running VPN. I believe and please do not quote me on this that Cisco will probably have something in writing if not already on this application soon. Oh and by the way it works great!! From a bussiness prospective My company went froma dial-up tp a frame to atm connection. We had to go through the same old speal of justifying why we should choose it verse dial up. for obvious reasons. It may be wise to get in touch with other companys asking vendors and all about how they like the services and what they use it for. Your main concern is to convince the uppers why it is a good move. its a reliable cost efficent semi fast connection.

jhouser79 brings up a good point. Why not consider ATM? I am not too well versed on ATM but I do know that ATM is newer technology and is fast becoming the protocol of choice vs. Frame Relay. I don't think Frame Relay is going to disappear anytime soon, but I also think ATM is something to consider for the long haul. Most backbone Internet traffic is on ATM nowadays.

Just my 2 cents.

Call me, I can send you some info and we can talk about your application 360-906-9932

Most of frame relay information for bussiness can be found from news article in magazines. Try Network computing and Informationweek.com. To justify the cost, its a bit complicated to find it on the web, because it depends on the providers. You may well consult a representative from some providers to get a pre quotation. but one thing is for sure, some adsl installation are installed under UBR QoS. Meaning it is unspecified bitrate. if your adsl subscription is under UBR QoS and u are going to deploy many new application that are more interactive, i would say u need FR. But if u really have the budget and the future plans are moving towards bandwidth greater than 2Mbps, u definitely should eye on ATM. I hope this is helpful.

You need to learn to analyze different technologies. Go get a textbook, read it and apply your analytical skills. What makes you think what you get from the web is correct, anyway? If the info is from a respected supplier, the info will be biased especially when it talks about advantages. So, use a little common sense. Write down the costs of the current lines, and then write down the costs if you were to run Frame Relay instead. Maybe it will be cheaper. And, ofcourse, it's not just the cost that you must consider. But, this is the time for you to practice your analytical skills. The reason that your peers may not be listening to your ideas is because you can't analyze things and present them with Pros and Cons. Why should they listen to you? You can't tell them ... well, according to the website ... If you are well-educated, please don't ever say that. I already know what kind of education America provides -- well, what can it really provide when there is a mass immigration of unskilled workers from the Southern border and then multiply like rabbits and then demand that the American people educate and feed them. And oh, they demand to have their Arts and Culture be taught in American Universities. Never mind the sciences and mathematics and the analytical skills we need in order to make sound decisions.
