Hello Guy ,
I have created a new post but it is really a carry on from a old post. I got slightly frustrated with my frame relay config not working that I ended up ripping all the cables out and wiping the config from the interfaces and starting again.

I have three router and have config'ed 1 to be a frame relay switch with the following config

interface Serial0
no ip address
encapsulation frame-relay
logging event subif-link-status
logging event dlci-status-change
clock rate 56000
no frame-relay inverse-arp
frame-relay intf-type dce
frame-relay route 111 interface Serial1 222
!
interface Serial1
no ip address
encapsulation frame-relay
clock rate 56000
no frame-relay inverse-arp
frame-relay intf-type dce
frame-relay route 222 interface Serial0 111

The other router has the following

interface Serial0
ip address 172.12.123.1 255.255.255.0
encapsulation frame-relay
!
and the other

interface Serial0/3/0
ip address 172.12.123.2 255.255.255.0
encapsulation frame-relay
no ip route-cache

My understanding of it is that I have configured the frame relay switch with the correct dlcis and then allowed the other routers to use inverse - arp to dynamic work out the dlci and allow the two routers to communication through the frame relay switch.

When I run the command- show frame route on the FR switch I get the following

FrameRelaySwitch#show frame route
Input Intf Input Dlci Output Intf Output Dlci Status
Serial0 111 Serial1 222 active
Serial1 222 Serial0 111 active

I cannot ping from one router to the other through the FR switch.

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong.

I know that the clockrate should be higher than the one set and that I can statically config the routes on the routers which is recommended, but even with this config I should be able to ping , shouldnt I ???

Thanks

You need to statically assign the maps---remember what i said about mixing static and dynamic i-arps?

Burt

Thanks Burt, Dnt know if Im just beening a little stupid here or just getting really confused. I have no frame-relay inverse-arp command on the routers now and have the following command-
frame-relay map ip 172.12.123.1 222
&
frame-relay map ip 172.12.123.2 111

but I still cannot ping, My confusing lies in the fact that when I run show frame map I can see the map and the status is active.

If I run a show int s 0/3/0 i can see that the line and proctol are up, frame-relay is the encap type DTE LMI up and LMI enq sent and recvd have entrys against them ?...

so why can I not ping, We are still at L2 here arent we? I dont need to config any routing ? I should be able to ping through the frame relay switch using only the serial int dce and dte cables and a rollover cable connecting me to one of the switches.?

hahahaha

Thanks

p[ost a sh run and a sh int
and a sh frame lmi, sh frame map, sh frame dlci

Burt

It's been so long, I may have to lab this myself tomorrow...

Burt

This is from one of the routers .Do you want the same config from the FR switch ?

This interface

interface Serial0
ip address 172.12.123.1 255.255.255.0
encapsulation frame-relay
frame-relay map ip 172.12.123.2 111
no frame-relay inverse-arp

is connected to what frame switch interface? Also, I would put in the keyword "broadcast" after the frame relay map command...

Burt

Crap---here's your problem...

LMI Statistics for interface Serial0 (Frame Relay DTE) LMI TYPE = CISCO

Default is ANSI,and since you have not specified it on the frame switch, it defaulted to ANSI. If you want i-arp to decide the LMI, you have to also put in

frame-relay lmi-type ansi

on the frame switch. It is good practice to do this anyway. Do a sh frame lmi on the other router to make sure---if it is CISCO, then make the lmi-type on the frame switch CISCO.

Burt

Hi Burt, Thanks for the reply, I check the all the lmi types and they were all set to CISCO. I have changed them to ANSI to see if that will make any differnce and allow me to ping through the FR switch, but still no luck and also added the 'broadcast' syntax like to said.

I have posted the full config, if you a little spare time can you take a look please. (loosing me hair over this)

Just to oonfirm. I have a FR switch with 2 s interfaces and nothing else connected to it. Int s 0 is connected to another 2503 switch - to it int s 0 and int s 1 on the FR switch is connected to s 0/3/0 on a 2801 router. I have nothing else connected other than a rollover cable to config the routers

Many Thanks.

I know this is a tedious process, but can you do the same for the other two routers? also, the lack of output in the debug frame-relay packet is concerning. Were you attempting to generate any traffic between the two end-points when you ran it?

Here is the debug output from the other two routers, No I want generating any traffic.

I there an commnd that I can use to generate traffic ??

Hmmm, your LMI debugs look fine. I would attempt to generate some pings from the 2801 to the RouterB and vice versa while your debug frame-relay packet is enabled on all three routers. Layer1 and Layer2 look good on all of the serial interfaces. I'm going to assume that when you attempt to generate pings you are doing it to/from 172.12.123.1 and 172.12.123.2 and not to some other remote subnet?

I hate all Uppercase... I don't want my groups to seem angry at me all the time! =)

yep, when I try to ping its from 2801 to router b or visa versa. I just cannot work it out. Its been a great troubleshooting experience, but I need to finish it off , I just cannot leave it like this. I wonder what it is???

Is there any test that I can do so that I can test each interface on the router to make sure that it not one interface that has something wrong with it???

thanks

sorry...caps...

is the CISCO the lmi type? If so, why would it choose this?

You can just make point to point links, but save the configs before you do that. This would be to simply test layer 1.

Hi burt,

When you say point to point links? do you mean, take 1 serial int of router connected it using dce/dte cable to another switch and then ip between them ?

Yes---to test simple connectivity and rule out interface problems. Most of the show outputs look normal---the fact that a few things---suspect lmi type, this
LMI enq recvd 0, LMI stat sent 0, LMI upd sent 0
all point to something simple we're missing. But just to make sure at this point before we all go bald, let's rule out layer 1 issues in one fell swoop and then concentrate on config issues. I have not labbed this up yet---post a sh controllers for each connected frame interface, from the 2 routers as well as the frame switch. Let's make double sure the right ones are there, dce/dte, and that they're wired right. Then save the configs, tear it all down, and put simple ip addressing between ppp links, clocking the dce side.

For ships and grins, can you first clock the switch at 4000000?

I had a head scratcher on mine at first last year when I labbed it again, and I enabled RIP...lol
