i have been experimenting with exporting our networked information system onto a linux server (redhat)..with some qualified success..i have problems packing small files when they reside on the samba server..they just disappear
i know that foxprow creates a new file for the packed contents and then renames the new file the same as the original..
small files 50 records..40 deletions..data lost
largefiles 10000 records 10 deletions...no problem
i thought that it may be a file locking problem so i
have reduced the locking protocols supported by samba
this gives better reporting of the file status but i am still unable to pack small files

any ideas ?

You may be better off doing a COPY TO instead of PACK. PACK has never been 100% stable in my opinion. Do something like:

USE MyTable
COPY TO NewFile FOR !DELETED()
USE IN MyTable
ERASE MyTable.DBF
RENAME NewFile.DBF TO MyTable.DBF
