Hm,

Right now I had an error message stating MSVCR71.DLL missing when starting Foxpro during an update of RealPlayer. But while the Realplayer Update still installs, VFP9 now can start.
Maybe that was rather a hard drive issue and just coincidence, but I thought it was worth mentioning, something like this can happen.

Unfortunately I didn't make a screenshot of that message, But if you come across such a message, this can be a temporary problem.

Bye, Olaf.

Yes, RealPlayer really is just optional. I'm stil not sure, if it was interfering with VFP by "using" msvcr71.dll exclusive, if that is possible at all. That's how I would describe what happens. But maybe that can not only happen with RealPlayer, but with any C++ app using that same runtime as VFP. It's hardly reproducable, though.

The important information about this is, this isn't a hard problem, as it was only temporary, no reason to panic. If that DLL really is missing, it could be restored from the VFP CD, anyway.

Bye, Olaf.

If it was an install, it could have been *writing* msvcr71.dll which would of course block anything from using it.

(Dumb way to install but, as we all know, installers are often under-implemented.)

This was just an update (an automatic one, as most apps nowadays do), nevertheless the msvcr71.dll may have been written. That shouldn't take very long, I had the message about the missing DLL three times, so I assume it wasn't not the moment of overwriting it, that would only explain a on time occurrence, a very (un)lucky one, but not three.

Bye, Olaf.

I had a similar problem several years ago with a app installation, regarding msvcr70.dll. It turned out, the install program put the dll in the Root Folder, rather than the correct system folder.

I copied it to the application folder, and VFP was happy to find it there. Problem solved.
