Found New Hardware Wizard Error 1

Hi, I am trying to reinstall my hp deskjet 3420 (that I haven't used for a while)
via usb but the Found New Hardware Wizard finishes with an error saying:

"Cannot install this hardware. There was a problem installing this hardware: hpdeskjet
3420. An error occurred during the installation of this device. The i/o operation
has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request. Click
finish to close the wizard."
Can someone explain what this error message actually means in non-jargon please?

I am running xp pro service pack 1. All my other USB
devices are working fine, please someone help me!!!???

Do a clean install:

Check to make sure you have the absolutely current driver version for the printer on the HP site.
