I added a new printer to my computer and it works fine. Every time I reboot, however, I get the found new hardware balloon and a dialog box trying to find the install disk for the printer.

How do I stop this behavior?

Have you tried putting the cd for the printer in there and letting it go ahead and try to install the printer driver again? That might cause it to go away.

TC

Thank you, bc and tc.

But, alas, what I think y'all pointed out was this is another Microsoft Miracle....

To answer your questions:

TC sez: Have you tried putting the cd for the printer in there and letting it go ahead and try to install the printer driver again?

BC sez: Did you happen to print a test page?

Yes, to both questions (see my original post).

Thanks!

Tony, the balloon says: Found new hardware Minolta - QMS PagePro 1250W.

There is also a dialog box that says (in bad English typical of Microsoft): The file MIMFN5_C.DLL on Minolta-QMS PagePro 1250W is needed.

I have that disk and when I point the dialog box to that disk and that folder and that file, XP does not recognize it and will not let me re-install it.

As I said earlier, the printer is working just fine; it's that danged balloon I was trying to get rid of!

bcastner pointed me to a Microsoft "Knowledge" (Bill Gates must have a different definition of that word than the rest of the world has) Base file that pointed out that since the printer is not a true plug and play, then that balloon is doomed to stay there forever.

Tony, I have a screenshot if you need it. If so, write me judgehopkins at lycos.com.

Thanks again for your help and interest!

According to Minolta the printer is Plug-n-Play.

"Standard Interfaces: USB and IEEE 1284 parallel interfaces supporting Microsoft ‘Plug and Play’ "

Silly question, but have you tried downloading the latest driver from Minolta and reinstall the printer using that? I realize the printer works properly, but it sounds like that .dll that the add new hardware is looking for isn't for XP. I assume you are using the USB interface?

One more thing you might try, although it is not the best solution, is to uninstall the driver and try using the built-in PagePro 1100 with windows XP. I know on HP printers, you can quite often mix/match laser drivers as long as your just doing basic printing.

I may try downloading the latest driver; I will let you know if that works.

Linney, I read all that post you cited but I cannot find (on my machine) where to get to the do not install and/or do not autodetect.

Thanks for trying, though!

At some point in the wizard (I think it is on page 2 at the bottom) there is a "never install this hardware again" box you can tick. Hopefully this will end the constant installing.

If it is not there on the constant reruns of the Found New Hardware Wizard, maybe removing your Printer and Drivers and then reinstalling them may cause it to be displayed as you reinstall them. This is just a guess, treat it as such.

linney, you say: At some point in the wizard (I think it is on page 2 at the bottom) there is a "never install this hardware again" box you can tick. Hopefully this will end the constant installing.

I can never get to that point.

I want to thank y'all for trying to help me; I am just going to put up with this Gatesian irritation (isn't that redundant?) and close this question.

I was hoping (foolish optimist that I am) that there would be a simple answer!

Have you checked device manager to see if there are any signs there of a problem? You may find somethere there that could be useful.

garebo, I am using XP Home so I do not think device manager is on my system....

bcastner, did that (i.e., found the device manager) but there was nothing there about printers....

I think if you did the 3 little steps in my post a few posts above your problem will go away.

bcastner, you are no doubt correct, but, alas, I could find no info on an updated printer driver for XP for the Minolta printer I have on the link you sent and could find nothing on it after Google or Vivisimo.
