Forwarding to external e-mail problem

I have setup a contact that is used to forward mail to an external e-mail address (SMTP:user@aol.com). This kind of works fine - it forwards mail but we also appear to be receiving mail from this address which is causing problems. How do i stop this. Is it because the external mailbox is an internet mail one or is SMTP also receiving as well as forwarding?
