I am new to Sendmail and I have problem that I think is easy to solve, but I am just missing something.

I have two Linux servers running sendmail. One is the mail server (server1) and the other is running sendmail so messages can be forwarded to server1.

I am trying to forward the messages that are generated each night as a result of the cron jobs that are being run. All messages are sent to the root account.

So, I need to forward any messages for root to Jay.Hall@server1. I have tried to do this by adding an alias for root on server2 root: Jay.Hall@server1 but without luck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's easier than you might think - simply create a ".forward" file in / and enter the e-mail address of the user that you want to forward the mail to.

Thanks. I'll give that a try just as soon as all of the morning problems are taken care of.

I created a .forward file in the / directory with an entry in the file Jay.Hall@server2. The mail was not forwarded (at least to anyplace that I can find).

I have checked the hosts file and an entry for the server does exist in the hosts file.

Do I have the format for the .forward file correct, or is more information needed?

Thanks for your help.

I got it. I had to put the .forward file in root's home directory. Everything is working great now.

Thanks for your help.
