Formulae in Word, referencing columns not adjacent???

OK field codes - formula
I want to multiply a "price per" cell in one column by a quantity in another column.
My solution uses "=sum(right)*sum(left)" because it will pick-up the values in adjacent columns and sum as far as the first zero (or text). However there is a need (from an analy retentive) to have the columns look pretty rather than functional.

So - how do I reference a column more than one away from the cell with the formula in? In Word?

I can do it in Excel and copy/paste - which I do when buying on-line anyway but I should be clever enough to figure this one - but it ain't happening!

Just tried a formula

=d3*e3

which does the calculation but all references are absolute in Word - so copying down the column does not index the cell reference which make the Excel copy/paste wheeze more attractive.

All ideas welcome though

That is why there IS Excel. Word is a word processor. It sucks at doing this.

I might agree, but the people making the decisions have decreed "Word" and they presumably have no better job than to calculate manually.

Purchase orders to an Engineer are a means to an end and good engineers find quicker more accurate ways (or less error prone) to do things. So Excel start point and copy and paste it is then. I do it when buying on the web. Copy from the web and extract in Excel. then copy & paste.

So whatever I buy - that is what get, we pay for, and can be checked. I do notice mistakes when others do all this manually.

Word has it's good points - this isn't one of them. I ain't complainging - just trying to do a job. Ho hum.
