Really just soliciating opinions here, But do you think it is necessary to format the modern new HDD's?

What do you mean by "modern new" hard drives? Most new PCs have HDs are preloaded with the OS and software by the manufacturer so I would argue it could hurt to do it.

I was guessing Vansplatter meant a new boxed hard drive i.e. not used in a computer before.

If he/she means one thats currently in a computer I would suggest getting all info wanted off it before considering a format.

Vansplatter, if you give us all more info we can help better...

crisc,

What I meant by Modern New is a current new drive not one that may still be new but a couple of years old. The drives I am referring to are purchased as a seperate piece of equipment not part of a system. I would definately not format away my OS. I tend to do it anyway, I was just curious as to the need to do it. Old habits die hard.

Now that we've cleared up my confusion, I'd agree with thatrenowned...Whenever I'm building/rebuilding a PC and I want to start from scratch I format.

Maybe I should clarify my question, I too format, but I was wondering is it necessary? The old drives werenot formated but are the new ones? Just Curious, have a great day

Some new HDs may come preformatted, and you'd obviously find out pretty quickly if it wasn't when you tried installing an OS on them. ;]
I usually want to set up partitions on the HD, (especially on big drives) and once you FDISK to create the partitions, you wipe out any FAT entries anyways, so formatting would be necessary anyway.

Why do we Format a HD?
Surely not for fun or by habit... hehehe
I do it to clean it up so that I know its clean, surely FDisk if I need to change partitions. Also to make sure their are no bad sectors and if so to mark them or return the HD for a new one.

Basicly to start with a clean slate as per say. Hope this Helps

When adding a new drive to your system, it's good practice to format the drive as well as fdisk it. Fdisk, when used with the proper switches, ie. /mbr, /u, and /s, ensures maximum capacity as well as the opportunity to partition the drive as well, ( 40GB drive D to 10GB drive D and a logical 30 GB drive E.) Fdisk also performs a rudimentary "disk integrity" check. When satisfied with fdisk, partitioned or not, then format.
