I have a spare hd that I would like to add as a slave to my wife's win xp system, but the hd was from a win 98 machine that no longer exists. I have read the threads, so all I have to do is set the jumpers correctly, let the bios detect, and then f disk, or format that drive to bring it in compliance with the system??

Install as described and use XP's Disk Management to perform operations on the drive. Start, Run..., diskmgmt.msc

If the jumpers are properly set, then XP should have no problem viewing and accessing the drive in question. XP is more than capable of reading Win98-FAT32 formatted drives.

If you still want to format it, then yes Disk Management should help you do that.

The only real thing to be careful about is, the jumpers. if its going to be added to an IDE cable that already has something connected to it, then set the jumpers for salve, if its going to be alone then it can be set to master.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

I would probably suggest setting up the old hard drive on the secondary IDE port, just for speed sake. Remember that your older W98 drive will be a slower drive than the current one. Just something to think about when figuring out if it's actually needed or it's just being done because you have a spare drive.

Cheers!!
