Formatting a text result

Heyas all,

Me again =(

As there is a means of formatting a Date field result, is there an equivalent function for edditing text.

IE I have a link to a table that has a compkey as its unique identifier, and a UnitID as an asset identifier.

The compkey can be expired but the UnitID has to be altered (IE was 1234-LS- 9 would alter to 1234-LS- 9X01) and then a replacement asset identifier was 1234-LS- 9 can be input)

What I have however is other tables linked with the compkey of the expired asset which I then need to some how map back to the replacement asset.

Only consistent is the 1st part of the Unit ID remains the same in all cases and an X identifies it as altered (although the 01 suffix etc can change).
Therefore if I could make a table based on the the expired assets UNITID I could map it to the replacement.

Have searched the net however and cannot find any pointers regarding formatting a text field in such a manner.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Just what functions I need to be looking at would be a plus.

Text is Text. It it NUMERIC fields that get formatted.

Are those Field Values? That must have been conceived by Lucifer himself! You're not kidding us, are you?

The only way that I know of editing the entry is to run a procedure (VBA) that has all the logic (rules) for entry in the field.

Not sure if I'm reading your request correctly, but you might want to look into CASCADE UPDATE in your relationships.

Yup afraid those are actual values that appear and once it is expired it is the only vaguely consistent link in the tables =P

Hey go figure I didnt think of it.... I just have to work with it =)

As for cascading updates.... will look into it.... isnt that where u look at a blank and erase it next space and erase it etc until you get a consistent... if so the amounts of queries would be huge?? 1st to change it into a consistent and then to change it back again into the format used by the linked database which I am going to have to update with the associate table links to the new related record?
Anyway will look that up.
