I am formatting a 10G hard drive and I keep getting a message "Trying to recover allocation unit"
It does format and shows no errors on the drive.
Why am I getting this message and does it mean I should replace the hard drive?

Run the drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility - usually available from their website.

This may be as simple an one or two bad sectors that are being checked out. Or it could be many more. Or a problem between the controller and drive.

Sometimes a zero fill will resolve the issue. But the diagnostic as Wolluf suggests is the first step.
You might also be able to partition the drive in such a way as to bypass a bad area on one of the platters.

Usually you will get notification of bad sectors in the summary.

The format found an area on the drive that has previously been marked bad. It is attempting to recover all the sectors that are in the same cluster.

And a scandisk with surface scan would be a good idea to see what the OS is unhappy with.
