Formatting 8mm Tape Cartridges

I am trying to find info on how to format an 8mm tape. Our work group rec'vd a bunch of tapes that can be reused. But I was thinking it was a good idea to format them before using, because I do not know what type of data is on this tapes.

This depends on the software that you are using as this operation is software prompted. If you are using Windows native back-up you would "prepare the tape" in RSM, like with Veritas Back up Exec you would also do this WITHIN the software.
