Hi, I am running AIX 5.2 on one of my server but I want to go back to AIX 5.1. I am unable to install over the 5.2 installation. Is there a way to format the root disk so I can do a fresh install?

I copied this from a doc I wrote a while ago..... the formatting might suck

*****

check the bootlist order to see if cd0 is listed first “bootlist –m normal –o”

If cd0 is listed first do nothing, if it isn’t change the boolist order with “bootlist –m normal cd0 hdisk0”

Insert an AIX diagnostics cd into the cdrom drive.

Shutdown and reboot the rs6000 off the cdrom “shutdown –Fr”

After rebooting, select 1 “to use this terminal”

Enter at the “Diagnostic Operation Instruction Menu”

Select “Task Selection”

Select monitor type

Type in the model and press enter

Select “Format Media”

Select all the hdisks you want to format by hitting enter on each one ( or all resources )

hit F7 to commit it and start the process

Format without certify

Yes to format this drive

It's odd that it wouldn't let you do a Full Installation. It shouldn't care what's already on the disk, beyond perhaps warning you that it will be destroyed.

What sort of errors or messages did you get when you tried to install?

Blanking-wise, hfaix has you set. I've used the diag tool to format and overwrite with patterns several drives on a decommissioned server recently, and it worked fine. Obviously you won't need to overwrite with patterns.

I dont understand why 5.1 cannot be installed over the 5.2 installation... I have performed that many times before and have even installed 4.3.3 ... 4.3.2 over a 5.2 install without any problems at all....

Maybe something is being misunderstood, or misread on the install process???
