Forestprep for a new exchange 2003 server on a new child domain

Advise please....
I have setup a new child domain and installed a new DC on a new site for this new child domain. This server will eventually be at the other end of the country on a vpn circuit.

The Question....
From my reading, I have to run Forestprep on the root site PDC before I install Exchange on the child domain controller. Can anyone confirm that this is correct? and is there any issues that I need to watch out for as already running Exchange on the root domain and don't want to screw this site up!?
