I want to use words that are of french origin in Word 97 (eg rose with an accent on the e = wine).
How do I do it?

In Word 2000/2002 [don't have 97 on anything] you can go to Insert, Symbol, and look through the symbols for the font you are using. This is what Arial in Word 2002 looks like: Rosë. Other fonts may differ a bit.

Berton,

That should work in 97 too, if I'm remembering correctly.

tgmoon, suggest you write an FAQ with the information you have provided, so others can find it quickly in the future.

Hi all,

YOu can also use the Alt + keypad method to limit the number of keys yo need to press.

For example:
Alt + 0233 = é

Alt + 0201 = É

Alt + 0220 = Ü

Alt + 0255 = ü

and etc.

The Alt + shortcuts are all noted in the Character Map, just click on the symbol you need to use and in the bottom right corner the Alt + shortcut will show. Write down the ones you regularly use and you can put the symbols in everything including your emails without having to resort to opening the Character Map and using 'Insert' or trying to 'stretch' and hittiong several keys at the same time.

Note this only works using the keypad for numbers and not the number row of the keyboard.

Do those CTRL-SHIFT-etc shortcuts work only in Word? Is there an easy way to use them in other apps (Outlook, Excel, etc) and even better, in Windows in general?

Hello krinid

Use a short cut in Word to create the foreign character, then copy and paste into the other application. It certainly works for Access, Excel and Outlook Express.

Regards
Dave

Those shortcuts ONLY work in Word. The "copy and paste" option suggested by daveod is the best for other applications (Excel, Outlook, etc.).

Hi,

Or you could go to Control Panel and add the French configuration for the Keyboard. The accents are at the lower right part.

Ah, Jean-Paul. What a non-US-centric mind you have! ;-) Excellent suggestion.
