I have a Laptop PC running Win98 and Office 97. I can enter foreign characters in Windows, other non-Microsoft software, and Access 97 using Alt+Fn and the 3-digit numeric code. I can not do it in Word 97. Can anyone explain why not and/or tell me what code needs to be reset in Word to allow this. It can be done on a desktop (Win 98 and Office 97) using only alt and the number pad. and thus should be possible on a laptop.(Pasting from character set or switching to foreign keyboard not feasible under the circumstances.) Thanks.

I'm not VERY familiar with laptops, but I don't understand why it wouldn't work. Have you tried Insert-Symbol, and does this work for you? If so, have you tried the corresponding shortcut keys under the Insert-Symbol dialog? Does ANYTHING happen when you hit, for instance,

ctrl^E

You should get one of these:
ê

Also, don't forget that if you get something, but not what you wanted, you may need to change the font.

If none of this works, check out my Troubleshooting Word 97 and 2000 FAQ right here at tek-tips, ignoring some of the beginning instructions...you'll see when you read it. dreamboat@nni.com

What do you get when you use the laptop and the ALT (numbers) process?

Reply to Dreamboat: The insert-symbol does not include the right characters. The CTRL shortcut does not work. I can not customize the keyboard to the desired shortcut. (WORD puts in key combinations other than what I type)
Reply to IS/IT: I get nothing in WORD97. (Nor in Excel, but it works in ACCESS; also in Wordpad and Notepad, and in Windows and non-Windows apps., as I mentioned previously.

Try running these two commands with no applications open, by hitting Start-->Run and type:

winword.exe /regserver

and hit enter.

Do the same and type:

excel.exe /regserver

See if that helps. dreamboat@nni.com

Reply to Dreamboat: I tried your suggestion but get "ïnvalid command" or file not found errors. Should "regserver" be a listed file? I did a search with Explorer and can't find it.

regserver isn't a file, it's a command-line switch. If you're getting bad command or file name, you may need to find the path to winword.exe and include it, i.e.,:

c:\program files\microsoft office\office\winword.exe /regserver dreamboat@nni.com

Thanks for your suggestions. I tried most of those from the FAQ, but none worked. I did include the entire path, but it still didn't work. I'll try it once more with different spacing out of curiosity. Should I assume something was omitted in installation if it continues to give error messages?
I did stumble on the solution to my problem, however. I found that I couldnt use the numeric keypad as numbers and went in search of the cause of that. It wasn't in the hard copy manual but buried in the electronic manual was the explanation and solution for both problems. It seems for this computer (unlike my previous laptops), there are two parts to the numlock activation, one that activates (Fn + F8)and one that locks/unlocks it.(a "lock" key). While most software works (for foreign language characters) with only the activation on, it seems that Word and Excel 97 (unlike earlier versions) require both to be set "on". Fortunately this doesn't interfere with regular typing. I include these details for the use of anyone else who may have had problems with this. Using Fn + Alt + the three number code allows insertion of foreign and special characters at the speed of normal typing.

Good thought and a star for you farmor.

if you can type special chars in other apps but not in word or excel, why not try copying them from your other app, i.e. access, and pasting them into word?
