Can anyone comment on the pros and cons of this or suggest a better alternative

The cons? Microsoft hasn't created a decent anti-virus, anti-spyware solution yet, even the ones they bought they managed to kill off. (Sybari and GeCad)

But Microsoft and security???? It's a bit like putting a fox in charge of the chicken coop!

So you're saying b/c they are more likely to visit sites they shouldn't and thus infect a PC? How does it make MSE diff than Nod33, Symantec Norton, McAfee, etc? I mean the others often have additionally packaged security pieces, but as for the AV itself, how does it differ?

Not necessarily, they just say [ OK ] to everything. I will admit though that M$E is a slight improvement on Norton's though.

When friends or hosting clients say to me "I think my computer is infected with something". Nine times out of ten, they are using "that Microsoft thingy" and/or they paid for Norton's because "it came with the computer" and the 'trial' period ended.

Can't say much bad about MSE. Seems to me rather decent, fast, unintrusive and FREE.
I'd rather complain about McAf€€, who bundle their malicious shitware with every update of that limping invalid called Java RE...

@sggaunt: Not really aware of any decent server endpoint protection by MS and frankly: I wouldn't us it. For such protection I rather rely on experienced AV providers.
For example, we are using a hardware firewall + Sophos EP.

My SD's company suffered a ransomware attack where important data was locked on several endpoints and money demanded to fix it, this despite my pointing out several months back that her own company laptop had no security software installed. and what is their IT dept up to.
I put some basic free stuff on it and her laptop was the only one unaffected.
Unbelievably they paid up and even more unbelievably the HiJackers removed the block, now they have installed Forefront as an after the horse etc measure.
Seems to me that the HiJackers will be back and they need proper corporate protection. I don't know if they have a Hardware firewall, presume not or this would not have happened.

Thinking about this another unbelievable thing was the actual Ransom of only £500, (from a company with £10M turnover) I am wondering if this was an inside job?

Well, I just read up a little on the latest ForeFront bundle and it actually does not look too bad - provided the company had the good sense to also purchase the Web Protection Service with URL filtering and Web anti-malware CALs.
That being said, if ransomware makes it onto a frigging Server, then I suspect some baaaad practice going on IT security wise, anyway. And no EP suite is going to protect them from sheer idiocy.

Every Windows OS machine I've had in the last twenty years has had Avast installed from day one, it has caught everything the Internet has thrown at it, the signatures are often updated within hours of a threat being identified, because I get receive email from several "support@" and a few "catchall" mailboxes, getting eight or ten infected messages a day is normal, and every one gets stopped as K9 loads the message and reads the content to flag the spam ones.
In that time not one of my machines has had any kind on malware and the only toolbars installed on my browsers are the ones I actually want and choose to have active.
Anyone who asks my opinion on "the best antivirus" is told to remove AVG, Norton's, McAfee, Especially the the "Security scan" that gets bundled with Chrome, Nero and a few others, (if anybody is having problems with Windows 7 running "Startup Repair" every few days, make that your prime suspect.) and install Avast.

We use Forefront with about 200 users. It is ok, it has caught more than a few trojans and malware. We use it with SCCM 2012 R2. It is lightweight and easy to keep updates. If you have an SA agreement you probably got it for cheap. Microsoft isn't perfect but we've had absolutely no problems with Forefront since I implemented it over a year ago.

The answer is always "PEBKAC!

Rule of thumb. If anyone says an AV stops 100% of the malware out there, with no false positives, ignore them as they are an idiot or a scammer.
One test will show one as best, another will show product B is better and so on and so on.
Take your choice and take you chances.

Yes, but there is still the "top 5" which you should probably choose from as rated by A-V comparatives. But they do not review corporate level products.
