forced capital letter after a full stop (period)

after i type a full stop (a period) and continue with a low-cased letter, wp converts it to a capital letter. can this behaviour be turned off?
if i immediately delete the letter and type it again, it will appear as low-cased.
(i apologize to fellow wp users who don't approve my aesthetical taste).

MJT,

This can be turned off. In WP9 it is under Tools - Quick Correct. On the Format as you go tab uncheck the "Capitalize next letter after end of sentence punctuation" box.
