Is there a way force the use of IE when someone clicks on an html file, even though another browser has been specified as the default?

Having spent a fair amount of time searching at both the javascript forum here and at hotscripts.com, I came up emptyhanded. However, in all of those wanderings, I did come across the following which looks like the ultimate script on browser detection.

There is a warning on this page that says it represents "outdated web practices". I never did figure out what that was all about. However, so far the code here works for what I need to do.

I think it will, after all you are only looking for IE or Not that browser sniffer is trying to detect not only different browsers ie netscape, ie, opera ect but different versions as well. If I remember rightly a lot of these fell apart trying to detect different versions of netscape a lot caused I think by the fact that there was about 100 of them. The other problem is that Opera can report itself as IE.
Anyway hope you get it sorted

The situation was different a couple of years ago, the way browsers handled script implementation differed widely, some were extremely quirky eg Netscape 4 others didn't handle javascript etc etc and people therefore had to design different pages to cope with different browsers. Netscape had a much bigger shar of the browser market this has changed markedly the current philosiphy is to carefully code pages so they are acceptable in all browsers or design for IE and forget about the rest. As an example here is a snapshot of the last 2 months from the NE4x4 website, you can look at the info yourself if you go to the site and click in the visit counter in the bottom lefthand corner of the screen

ie 4,5&6 96%
Netscape 3.2%
Opera 0.2%
Others 0.78%

Last time I checked with other sites this is fairly representative. It's not a lie if you believe it!
